Entitlement Rant

To my sisters, friends, and future children,
Let me explain something to you. You are lucky. You come from a middle class family where 95% of your life, there has been money for whatever you want, whenever you want it. You have always had enough food to eat, a roof over your head, clothes and shoes that fit you, a car to get you places, and a family that loves you. You are privileged. But you are not entitled. There are plenty of people in this world who do not have any of these things. It is not their fault or your fault or anyone’s fault. It’s just a coincidence. You could just as easily have been born in an AIDS-ridden African community with no food and no water, living in fear of the government but you weren’t. You were born healthy, happy, and loved in the 21st Century United States. That is a blessing that you were given, not a right you have earned. It is something that can be taken away in the blink of an eye and it is a call for you to care for people who are not as fortunate. Privilege is not an excuse to be a self-centered prick that goes around making other people’s lives miserable. Privilege calls you to share what you have, to spread the love, to care for others, and to make the world a more beautiful place. The day you feel entitled to everything you have is the day you have officially failed as a human being. Do not ever allow yourself to be caught up so tightly in the materialism of the world that you lose sight of your humanity. Love everyone and never take a single breath for granted.
